Why Canada Needs Emerging Digital Solutions for Immigration: Takeaways from 100,000 Virtual Career Coach Users

We’re thrilled to share that our free AI-powered Virtual Career Coach has reached a major milestone! Since its launch this summer, 100,000 unique users have now used Welcome to Canada's Virtual Career Coach!

5 key takeaways:

1) Canada NEEDS emerging technology solutions for immigration. Re-/settlement budgets are oversubscribed; provinces and territories are experiencing social service, education and healthcare systems that are overwhelmed. For perspective: Canada's largest newcomer employment program serves 20,000 people a year on a $20M budget. The Virtual Career Coach is on track to serve >300,000 immigrants, refugees, pre-arrival newcomers, undocumented and temporary workers this year, for under $2M. To be blunt: Canada cannot afford not to invest in digital service platforms.

2) It is NOT an either/or. The Virtual Career Coach was designed to complement the work of settlement organizations, offering features that are self-directed, which clients can use to practice between in-person sessions, or while they are waiting for their intake or program to begin.

Our platform reaches and engages newcomers who are getting their information from TikTok and YouTube, or aren't sure where to go, then lets them know about the free, in-person services offered by service providing organizations near them.

Most importantly, the platform can serve clients who have a basic level of digital literacy skills and access, giving back precious time and focus for frontline workers to spend with clients who are most equitably served in-person.

3) Tech is not a one-and-done. Our current Virtual Career Coach is the tip of the iceberg. In the coming months, we will be releasing voice and video features, and more personalization. Moreover, once technology is built, it is cheap to scale. We are currently designing a white label for settlement sector partners to use with their logo and branding and links to their programs!

4) Donors: fund emerging technology within nonprofit programs. The vast majority of calls for proposals and project evaluations are not structured to solicit, properly evaluate or support proposals that utilize emerging technologies. This is central to the advancement of good technology in the nonprofit sector, and as such we have started advising philanthropists, foundations and public sector donors on how to update their funding strategies to more effectively fund emerging technologies for migration, settlement and integration. If you’re interested in improving how you fund programs that use emerging tech, we’d love to help! Send us an email at info@peacegeeks.org

5) We are in the midst of a new technological revolution. Most nonprofits I speak with are curious but wary about AI. There's good reason to be! AI integration needs to be incorporated beyond IT departments, into organizations' privacy, security, data, legal, ethics, governance, HR and training policies. Social impact work is too important to lag behind.

Thank you to everyone who has loved the Virtual Career Coach and shared it with your network! We are extremely grateful to Accenture Canada, and the Global Grant team for their partnership and vision to fund the Virtual Career Coach.
